Draw blood in a plain, red-top tube(s) 8 to 12 hours after last dose (trough specimen). Peak serum concentrations do not correlate with symptoms. Spin down and send 0.5 mL of serum.

Reference Values

Therapeutic concentration:  0.6-1.2 mEq/L (trough concentration)

Critical value:  >2.0 mEq/L
