Specimen Requirements

Draw blood in a plain, red-top tube(s) or a serum gel tube(s). Spin down and send 0.5 mL (minimum volume:  0.4 mL) of serum refrigerated.

Reference Values

CYTOMEGALOVIRUS ANTIBODIES, IgG

Negative (reported as positive, negative, or equivocal)

The presence of only IgG antibodies generally indicates past infection with CMV. Up to 80% of U.S. blood donors exhibit serological evidence of previous CMV infection.

CYTOMEGALOVIRUS ANTIBODIES, IgM

Negative (reported as positive or negative)

The presence of IgM antibody to CMV suggests recent or current infection.
